In some ways, Season 51 of Saturday Night Live may be remembered as the year of the female multi-talent performer. On Saturday, May 2, Olivia Rodrigo will be in Studio 8H to add her name to the list of women to have made history on the NBC show.
Rodrigo is serving as both host and musical guest for this week’s episode. That marks the second time this season that a woman has done both. Sabrina Carpenter pulled double duty for Episode 3 of Season 51.
This marks the 51st time an individual has performed as both host and musical guest on SNL. The first official instance was Desi Arnaz in Season 1, on February 21, 1976.
It’s been happening a lot more recently: in the last six seasons, SNL has had a double duty host 11 times.
Only a handful of times has one person done both on SNL more than once. Justin Timberlake has done it a record three times. Paul Simon, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Garth Brooks, Drake, Britney Spears, and Harry Styles have done it twice. Styles did it for his second time earlier in Season 51.
Olivia Rodrigo being amazing on-stage
What can we expect from Olivia Rodrigo when she hosts SNL and also performs as the musical guest? It should be amazing, if her past work is any measure.
