Better early than later. Universal Pictures has revealed that its Shrek spinoff movie Donkey will premier in theaters on June 30, 2028.

Former Saturday Night Live star Eddie Murphy will reprise the role he played in four previous Shrek movies from 2001 to 2010. Murphy predicted the spinoff last summer.

“Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys…They’ve written this funny story,” Murphy told ScreenRant in 2025.

It’s unclear whether SNL alum Mike Myers will serve in the role of Shrek in the Donkey movie. A new Shrek film, Shrek 5, is in post-production and will be released in 2027. Both Murphy and Myers will be in that film.

Murphy has been taking a trip down memory lane in recent years. In 2024 he starred in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, and in 2021 he appeared in Coming 2 America. Both were sequels to blockbuster movies from the 1980s.
