The official trailer for Chris Rock‘s Misty Green was dropped by A24 his week. The film is written and directed by former Saturday Night Live cast member Chris Rock.
This will be the first movie directed or written by Rock that receives a wide release since 2014. Misty Green is set to appear in theaters in October. The film stars Rock, Rosalind Eleazar, Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, and Topher Grace.
While the standup comedian has been linked to many projects as a director in the past, this film is his first foray into a dramatic story. Previously he directed I Think I Love My Wife (2007) and Top Five (2014).
The plot of Misty Green follows Eleazar as an actress with immense talent who was once the hottest name in Hollywood. But she’s consistently sabotaged her career through poor personal choices. Now she faces a bad situation involving her troubled brother. Misty Green is about the struggle of climbing up the mountain a second time.
Rock spent three seasons on SNL, from 1990 to 1993 (Season 16 into Season 18). As a black standup comic, he faced obstacles in breaking through on a show that wasn’t as friendly to minorities at that time. He belonged to a group of SNL cast members with Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and David Spade that became known as the “Bad Boys” of comedy in the 1990s. Most of those performers were fired from the show when NBC demanded Lorne Michaels pivot the show away from lowbrow college dorm-style material.
Rock has won four Emmy Awards for his standup specials and three Grammy Awards for his comedy albums. He’s one of the most popular standup comics who emerged from the late night program.
