SNL Season 4, Episode 7: Walter Matthau

B-

The 7th Episode of Season 4 of Saturday Night Live aired on December 2, 1978. The host was Walter Matthau, and the musical guest was Garrett Morris.
Legendary actor Walter Matthau was an old-school host who brought a gruff, curmudgeonly charm to the show. He wasn’t a natural sketch performer, but his unique screen presence was its own source of comedy. The best sketch of the night was “The Widettes,” featuring Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, and Laraine Newman as a family with incredibly wide behinds—a silly but hilarious bit of physical comedy. Bill Murray’s “Mr. Bill” film was another highlight. The show had its moments, but sometimes felt like the cast was working around the host’s limitations. In a rare move, cast member Garrett Morris was also the musical guest, and his earnest performance of a classical aria was both surprising and impressive.
