Fresh from the stratospheric success of Star Wars, Carrie Fisher was a fantastic host. She was funny, smart, and completely willing to poke fun at her iconic role. The monologue, where she complains about her Princess Leia costume, was great, and the sketch set at a Tattooine beach party was a brilliant parody. She had wonderful chemistry with the cast, particularly Gilda Radner. The musical guests were The Blues Brothers, who by now were a legitimate sensation. Their high-energy, soulful performances of “Soul Man” and “Almost” were electrifying and nearly stole the show. It was a perfect pop-culture moment: a timely host, a phenomenal musical act, and a cast at the absolute peak of its powers.
