The 18th Episode of Season 4 of Saturday Night Live aired on May 12, 1979. The host was Michael Palin, and the musical guest was James Taylor.
Michael Palin’s second hosting gig of the season was another delight. His charming, slightly eccentric style of comedy is a perfect match for SNL. The show featured the return of the “Idiot” sketch, this time set in a hospital, which was just as funny as the first. A sketch about a man selling Scottish bagpipe insurance was another highlight of gentle absurdity. Palin’s joy in performing is contagious, and the whole episode felt warm and wonderfully silly. James Taylor was the musical guest, and his classic, gentle folk-rock was a soothing and welcome presence. It was another fantastic collaboration, proving that a member of Monty Python could always be counted on for a brilliant show.
