SNL Season 2, Episode 7: Dick Cavett

C+

The 7th Episode of Season 2 of Saturday Night Live aired on November 13, 1976. The host was Dick Cavett, and the musical guest was Ry Cooder.
Dick Cavett’s second hosting stint was much like his first: witty, intelligent, and more reliant on clever wordplay than broad physical comedy. He has an easy, comfortable rapport with the cast, which makes for a pleasant viewing experience. The episode featured a very funny sketch where Gilda Radner’s Emily Litella gives a confused editorial on “presidential erections.” “Weekend Update” with Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd was particularly sharp, showcasing their great chemistry. The show felt sophisticated and smart, even if it lacked some of the high-energy zaniness of other episodes. Ry Cooder’s return as musical guest was a treat, his masterful guitar work perfectly complementing the episode’s cool, intellectual atmosphere.
