The 4th Episode of Season 2 of Saturday Night Live aired on October 16, 1976. The host was Karen Black, and the musical guest was John Prine.
Karen Black was an interesting host, bringing a quirky, slightly off-kilter energy to the show. She fully committed to every sketch, whether she was playing a neurotic talk show guest or a character in a bizarre film parody. The episode is best remembered for the debut of the “Coneheads” sketch, an instant classic that was perfectly strange and hilarious. Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin were brilliant. While not every sketch was a home run, the episode’s willingness to get weird was commendable. John Prine’s heartfelt, story-driven songs provided a grounding, folksy contrast to the on-screen absurdity. It was a solid, funny episode highlighted by the birth of one of the show’s most iconic families.
