Having television pioneer Norman Lear host was an intriguing choice. While not a performer, Lear’s presence gave the episode a sense of importance and intelligence. He was a good sport, appearing in a sketch that gently poked fun at his own famous show, All in the Family. The show itself was solid, with the cast delivering strong performances, particularly Gilda Radner’s “Baba Wawa” interviewing Lear. However, without a strong comedic host at the center, the episode sometimes felt a bit rudderless. It was a well-written and smart show, but it lacked the explosive energy that a great host can provide. Boz Scaggs’ smooth musical performances were a definite highlight, adding a cool, sophisticated vibe.
