The 13th Episode of Season 2 of Saturday Night Live aired on January 29, 1977. The host was Fran Tarkenton, and the musical guest was Leo Sayer, Donnie Harper.
With the Super Bowl approaching, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton took the hosting reins. Like many athletes, he was enthusiastic but not a polished actor. The show wisely built sketches around his football fame, including a funny bit where he tries to teach the cast how to throw a spiral. John Belushi’s intense Samurai character trying out for the team was a definite highlight. The episode had its moments, but it often felt like the cast was working hard to carry the comedic load. It was a fun, topical show that leaned heavily on its guest’s celebrity, but it didn’t quite reach the heights of the season’s best. Leo Sayer’s pop performances were energetic and enjoyable.
