The 9th Episode of Season 3 of Saturday Night Live aired on January 21, 1978. The host was Steve Martin, and the musical guest was Randy Newman, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Steve Martin’s second appearance of the season was somehow even better than his first. It felt less like a guest host and more like a cast member returning for a victory lap. This episode was packed with classic moments, from his stand-up about his “cat-juggling” hobby to the debut of “Theodoric of York, Medieval Barber,” a brilliant sketch that found humor in the ignorance of the Dark Ages. Martin’s energy is boundless, and he brings out the absolute best in the entire cast. The show was fast-paced, relentlessly funny, and wonderfully absurd. The musical guests were a last-minute replacement, but it didn’t matter. This was Martin’s show from start to finish, a comedic tour de force.
