The third season started with the show’s new superstar host, Steve Martin, and it was a perfect blast of inspired silliness. Martin was at the peak of his powers, and his monologue, where he complained about being a “slave to comedy,” was brilliant. The episode introduced the “Festrunk Brothers” (the wild and crazy guys) to a wider audience, and their cruise ship sketch with Gilda Radner and Jane Curtin was an instant classic. The entire show felt like a party, propelled by Martin’s unique, high-energy absurdity. Jackson Browne delivered a couple of great musical performances that provided a cool, mellow contrast. This was the cast and a host in perfect sync, kicking off the new season with incredible confidence and a huge number of laughs.
