The 21st Episode of Season 2 of Saturday Night Live aired on May 14, 1977. The host was Shelley Duvall, and the musical guest was Joan Armatrading.
Shelley Duvall brought her unique, eccentric charm to Studio 8H. She was a game and funny host, fully embracing the show’s silliness. A sketch where she and Gilda Radner play two incredibly awkward women on a talk show was a highlight of character comedy. The show also featured a great commercial parody for “Autoscent,” a car air freshener. Bill Murray’s “Nick the Lounge Singer” was back, this time crooning at a wake. The episode had a wonderfully weird and gentle vibe that perfectly suited its host. Joan Armatrading’s powerful and soulful musical performances were absolutely stunning, adding a layer of depth and artistry to a very solid and enjoyable show.
SNL host Shelley Duvall announces that tonight’s show will be delayed so that NBC can show a boxing match.
