The 16th Episode of Season 2 of Saturday Night Live aired on March 19, 1977. The host was Broderick Crawford, and the musical guest was Levon Helm, Dr. John, The Meters.
Veteran actor Broderick Crawford was an unusual hosting choice. His gruff, old-Hollywood style was a stark contrast to the young, hip cast. His delivery was often slow and ponderous, which the show sometimes used for comedic effect, but it also dragged the pace down. The sketches were a mixed bag; a parody of his old show Highway Patrol was a highlight. The cast, especially Dan Aykroyd with his masterful celebrity impressions, worked hard to keep the energy up. The musical performances were the true saving grace, with Levon Helm and Dr. John providing an incredible, authentic dose of American roots music. An awkward but musically rich episode.
Colorful singer Rhonda Weiss (Gilda Radner) and the Rhondettes (Laraine Newman, Jane Curtin, Linda Ronstadt) perform for the SNL cold open.
