The 10th Episode of Season 2 of Saturday Night Live aired on December 11, 1976. The host was Candice Bergen, and the musical guest was Frank Zappa.
Candice Bergen’s third time hosting proved once again why she was one of the show’s all-time greats. She brought her signature grace, wit, and comedic timing, elevating every sketch she was in. The Christmas episode felt festive and fun, highlighted by the classic “Consumer Probe” sketch with Dan Aykroyd as the sleazy toy manufacturer Irwin Mainway, defending his incredibly dangerous children’s toys. It was a brilliant piece of satire. Bergen was the perfect host, equally adept at playing the straight woman or getting a big laugh herself. Frank Zappa was an inspired, avant-garde musical choice, bringing a weird and wonderful energy that made the whole night feel special. A fantastic and memorable holiday show.
