The 1st Episode of Season 4 of Saturday Night Live aired on October 7, 1978. The host was The Rolling Stones, and the musical guest was The Rolling Stones.
The fourth season kicked off with an absolute event: The Rolling Stones served as both host and musical guest. The energy in the studio was electric. While the band members weren’t natural comedic actors, their sheer star power and willingness to play along was more than enough. Mick Jagger was particularly game, appearing in a hilarious “Point/Counterpoint” segment opposite Dan Aykroyd and in a sketch as himself trying to pick up a girl played by Laraine Newman. The musical performances of “Beast of Burden,” “Respectable,” and “Shattered” were raw, loud, and fantastic. It felt less like a standard episode and more like a legendary rock band had taken over the asylum for a night. An unforgettable, chaotic, and brilliant start to the season.
