The 13th Episode of Season 3 of Saturday Night Live aired on March 11, 1978. The host was Art Garfunkel, and the musical guest was Stephen Bishop.
Art Garfunkel was a charming and gentle host. Rather than going for broad comedy, the episode had a more whimsical and musical feel. His opening monologue, where he read poems from his book, set a unique, low-key tone. The show featured a running gag about Paul Simon being jealous of his hosting gig, which paid off with a surprise appearance from Simon himself. Their duet on “The Boxer” was a beautiful moment. The sketches were clever and often subdued. It wasn’t the most laugh-out-loud episode, but it was one of the most pleasant and artistically interesting. Stephen Bishop’s soft-rock songs fit the mood perfectly. A very sweet and memorable show.
