The very first episode felt like a grand experiment, and thankfully, it worked. George Carlin was the perfect choice for a host, delivering his signature monologues that felt both dangerous and hilarious for 1975 television. The show introduced the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players,” and you could feel the raw energy, even if not every sketch landed perfectly. The “Wolverines” bit with John Belushi was an instant classic, setting a wonderfully absurd tone. The Muppets felt a bit out of place, but musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian were fantastic. It was messy and a little chaotic, but you knew you were watching the start of something completely new and exciting.
