Before she became an Emmy-winning star of Roseanne and a Tony-winning Broadway performer, Laurie Metcalf had a very brief, one-episode stint as a featured player on SNL in 1981. She performed a monologue for a ‘Weekend Update’ segment that was ultimately cut for time after dress rehearsal. Due to a writers’ strike that season, the show went on hiatus, and she was not asked to return. Her SNL career is a bizarrely brief footnote in what would become an incredibly acclaimed and successful acting career, making her one of the most decorated actors to have ever been an official (if very short-lived) cast member.
