A handsome and versatile performer, Charles Rocket was hired by Lorne Michaels’ replacement, Jean Doumanian, to be the breakout star of the infamous 1980-81 season. He was positioned as the new Chevy Chase, anchoring ‘Weekend Update’ and appearing in numerous sketches. However, his tenure is forever marked by an infamous on-air incident where he dropped an F-bomb during the show’s goodnights. The controversy contributed to a major cast and producer overhaul, and Rocket was dismissed. He went on to have a solid career as a character actor in films and TV, but he was never able to fully escape the shadow of his brief, tumultuous time at SNL.
