Season 51 kicked off with a lackluster episode hosted by Bad Bunny, returning for his second stint on SNL. Curiously, the show chose a rather obscure political cold open to start the second 50 years of the show. It fell flat as a season opener. Bad Bunny took a more active role in sketches this time as host, speaking both his broken English and native Spanish. Unfortunately, the writing was very weak. We got to see a few of the new featured players get a chance, such as Veronika Slowikowska and Jeremy Culhane. But the weakness here was the sketches: there was a terrible segment called “The Donor” where Bad Bunny simply interrupts a conversation at another table. In another, Bad Bunny is simply a sexy set piece in a sketch set in a school principal’s office.
