“Misty Green,” the new movie written, produced, and directed by Chris Rock, is debuting in theaters across the United States this week. The reviews so far have been positive. Rock is doing what the best former SNL cast members do: charging ahead to create things and taking big swings while he does it.
Rock’s new movie means we could see the former Saturday Night Live star back at Studio 8H to host the show this year. The program has announced its hosts through the Halloween episode, but we have yet to hear which hosts will helm the show in November.
In each of the last 20 seasons SNL has welcomed back at least one former cast member to host. The last time it did not have a former cast member host was Season 31 in 2005-2006.
In each of the last 11 seasons, Lorne Michaels has asked at least two former cast members back to host his show:
- Season 51: Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell
- Season 50: Chris Rock, Martin Short
- Season 49: Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph
- Season 48: Martin Short (with Steve Martin), Molly Shannon
- Season 47: Jason Sudeikis, Will Forte
- Season 46: Chris Rock, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph
- Season 45: Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Kristen Wiig
- Season 44: Seth Meyers, Adam Sandler
- Season 43: Will Ferrell, Tina Fey
- Season 42: Kristen Wiig, Jimmy Fallon
- Season 41: Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Fred Armisen
Compounding the situation: Rock has hosted four times, which means he can join the Five-Timers Club the next time he comes back. The last two former cast members to join the Five-Timers were Kristen Wiig in Season 49 and Martin Short in Season 50.
