It didn’t take long for Heidi Gardner to put Saturday Night Live in her rearview mirror. Unceremoniously dumped by SNL prior to Season 51, denied an opportunity to have a proper sendoff, Gardner is now poised to become a movie star.
Filming will begin on The Swimming Lesson this summer, a major movie starring Gardner and Academy Award nominated actor William H. Macy. Shooting will take place in Gardner’s hometown of Kansas City, Missouri.
Details of the plot of The Swimming Lesson are leaking. Gardner will play a single mom who returns to her hometown with her autistic son. Macy plays her rough-edged father. The movie is from writer-director Casey Twenter (writer of Rudderless, 2014). Macy has experience with Twenter, having directed Rudderless, which was co-written by Jeff Robison.
The central conflict in The Swimming Lesson is a custody battle between Gardner and the father of her child. Twenter had Gardner in mind for the lead role of Tay.
“We knew Tay needed an actor who could carry the humor, chaos and heartbreak of this story, and Heidi is exactly that,” Twenter told Hollywood Reporter. “From there, the goal was surrounding her with a supporting ensemble that could meet her at that level, and there’s no better place to start than William H. Macy. Bill brings the bite, warmth and lived-in humanity Leonard needs, and I’m thrilled to be working with him again.”
Gardner spent eight seasons on SNL, from 2017 to 2025, the historic 50th season. She earned a reputation as a steady presence in sketch work. She also developed a few characters that drew laughs from behind the desk of Weekend Update. Most crucially, Gardner was a strong comedic actor and excellent supporting member of the cast in many situations. But, prior to Season 51 she was surprised to learn she was not being asked back to the program. The decision befuddled fans of the show, and may have led to the subsequent exit of Ego Nwodim, a close friend to Gardner.
Of cast members to leave the shown in the last two decades, Gardner seems to possess the acting chops to be successful in films or series work. She has landed several gigs doing voice work in recent years, and appeared in the most recent edition of the Scary Movie franchise, released in 2026.
